1. What is Chronic bacterial prostatitis

Chronic bacterial prostatitis is swelling and irritation (inflammation) of the prostate gland which develops slowly and lasts for a long period of time. It is a chronic infection of the prostate gland.

2. Causes of Chronic prostatitis

Chronic prostatitis is usually caused by a chronic bacterial infection of the prostate gland. It may occur with or follow:
(1) epididymitis
(2) Acute prostatitis
(3) Urethritis
(4) Urinary tract infection that often returns (is recurrent)

The most common bacteria species that cause chronic prostatitis include:
(1) Escherichia coli
(2) Proteus species
(3) Enterobacter cloacae
(4) Klebsiella pneumonia

Risks include:
(1) Age over 30
(2) Excessive alcohol intake
(3) Certain sexual practices (such as anal sex without a condom)
(4) Injury to the perineum (the area between the scrotum and anus)

These factors may cause congestion of the prostate gland, which produces a breeding ground for bacteria.
Other possible causes are related to stress and tightness of the pelvic muscles.
