A very common, annoying and inconvenient condition, cystitis causes frequent, painful urination as a result of inflammation of the bladder. It’s usually the result of an infection or bruising after athletic or prolonged sex. Here’s what you can do.

1. Drink lots of fluid at the first sign. It’s important to get urine flowing fast to flush out the bladder.

2. Make your urine alkaline by drinking milk and adding a little bicarbonate of soda to your drinks. You’ll find that making your urine alkaline eases bladder pain quite considerably.

3. Try to avoid tea or coffee as they make it worse.

4. Urinate as often as you feel the need.

5. For pain relief, take paracetamol every four hours. Don’t take anything containing aspirin as it makes urine more acidic.

6. Keep warm – a hot water bottle on your tummy can be very comforting.

7. Avoid perfumed soaps or bubble baths as they can cause further irritation.
If all the above fails, see your doctor and look for effective treatment.
