A vaginal infection or a sexually transmitted disease can cause cervicitis. The three most common infectious causes of cervicitis are chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomonas. All three are considered sexually transmitted diseases. Most often, the bacterial and viral infections that cause cervicitisare transmitted by sexual contact. Cervicitis can result from infection with common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including gonorrhea, chlamydia and genital herpes.

A number of other organisms, including herpes simplex, streptococcus, staphylococcus, enterococcus, and Gardnerella vaginitis, can also cause cervicitis. HIV , infection with the herpes virus ( genital herpes ), and human papillomavirus ( HPV, genital warts ) are additional STDs (also now called STIs) that put you at risk for developing cervicitis.

Allergic reactions. You may have an allergy to contraceptive spermicides or to latex in condoms that leads to cervicitis.

Injury or irritation. a reaction to the chemicals in douches and contraceptives or a forgotten tampon also can cause the disease. The objects may simply cause irritation and make the cervix more susceptible to infection.
