People always ask me where I studied Traditional Chinese Medicine. I reply "California, where else?" This is a joke, because California is probably the biggest educator of students in the field of TCM, outside of China. I have traveled to numerous countries, and many parts of the world in my practice of Chinese Medicine, and the second most commonly asked question is: "Wouldn't you like to study TCM in China?" Of course, I had always thought about it, and about two years ago, I made the decision to come to Hangzhou.
Although it was moderately difficult to adjust, at first, I have really grown to love studying TCM in China. The reason for this love is not strictly academic, or some cerebral satisfaction I gain from gleaning the secret knowledge that can only be gained by the direct communication between student and teacher.
No, it is because I am able to live amongst the people, to ride the bus, to walk down the streets, to laugh with my teachers, and to understand their view of life and how their understanding of Traditional Chinese Medicine is not just an idea, but a way of life.
I see the culture more clearly, and the richness of it. I see the beauty of the people. The older ladies dancing in the parking lot, or the laughing babies reflecting an ancient wisdom. I understand the longevity of the people, and the staying power of the culture. I understand how the medicine is an integral part of this culture. Ancient, and wise beyond it's years, like the baby. It reflects the past, and is the future.
As there may be many differences between Chinese Medicine in the East and West, one thing that they have in common is that the vast majority of people that have experienced TCM will attest to it's efficacy. They will tell you without hesitation that "IT WORKS!"
