It is unfortunate that little is known about the real causes of chronic nonbacterial prostatitis or inflammatory chronic pelvic pain syndrome. However, health professionals believe the possible causes include:

(1) Urine flow is blocked
(2) Abnormal movement of urine and prostate secretions into the prostate
(3) Microorganisms that may infect the prostate (however, they usually are not detectable in the urine)
(4) The immune system attacks the prostate
(5) Abnormal nerve or muscle function
(6) Some chemicals normally found in the urine, such as uric acid, which may get into the prostate and cause irritation
