(1) Causes of bacterial prostatitis

Bacterial prostatitis is one type of prostatitis which is caused by the infections of one pathogenic bacterium or several kinds of bacteria in your prostate. The disease-causing bacteria is Gram-negative aerobic bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Gram-positive bacteria such as staphylococcus, streptococcus and type diphtheria bacteria can also cause prostatitis. Many people doubt whether Gram-positive bacteria can really cause chronic prostatitis. Based on substantial clinical observation, we came to understand that chlamydia and mycoplasma may also cause prostatitis.

(2) Types of bacterial prostatitis

Actually, there are two types of bacterial prostatitis. One is acute bacterial prostatitis which is typically over quite quickly, the other is chronic bacterial prostatitis which lasts a long time and can frequently recur. It should be pointed out that the terms acute and chronic refer to time, not how serious the condition is.
The symptoms of acute and chronic bacterial prostatitis are quite different in their severity.

(3) Symptoms of acute bacterial prostatitis

Men with acute bacterial prostatitis would suddenly get the symptoms such as a fever with shivers, pains and aches in muscles and joints, general malaise, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, severe pain in lower back, penis, rectum, urinary frequency and urgency, burning urination, and dysuria, a feeling of needing to urinate more than you usually do at night, and sometimes, there is even blood in the urine. Occasionally you may have acute urinary retention. Acute bacterial prostatitis is associated with cystitis.

(4) Symptoms of chronic bacterial prostatitis

The symptoms of chronic bacterial prostatitis also differ in severity. Some cases may be asymptomatic, others may have general malaise. The symptoms of chronic bacterial prostatitis are less serious than those of acute bacterial prostatitis and you usually have them for a longer period of time (at least three months). Men with chronic bacterial prostatitis may have the following symptoms: frequent urination, painful urination, mucus around the mouth of urethra in the early morning, pain in the area between your scrotum and anus, as well as in your lower abdomen, penis (especially the tip), testicles, rectum, groin, medial thigh, and lower back, feel tired and dizzy, and have insomnia. The long-lasting inflammation from prostatitis can even cause physical allergic reaction, resulting in conjunctivitis, arthritis and other complications.

(5) Consequences of bacterial prostatitis

Chronic prostatitis can cause hypaphrodisia, painful ejaculation and premature ejaculation. And it may affect the quality of semen. When chronic prostatitis is associated with seminal vesiculitis, men would have blood in the semen.
