Reasons for infertility in women:
1. Ovulatory dysfunction
This can be caused by multiple conditions, like polycystic ovary syndrome or premature ovarian failure.
2. The sick fallopian tubes
If the woman has tubal diseases such as blocked fallopian tubes and hydrosalpinx, then there is great possiblity that she is infertile.
3. The damaged womb
If woman experiences diseases like endometriosis or adenomyosis, her uterus is likely to be affected. And this can also make her infertile.
Reasons for infertility in men:
1. Abnormal semen
Low sperm count or no sperm at all.
Sperm with sluggish mobility
Sperm that is in abnormal shape
2. Damaged testicles
Undescended testicles
Infection such as mumps or gonorrhoea
Testicular cancer
Other reasons that can affect fertility:
1. Age
The fertility ability for men gradually declines from the age of 40 while for women from the age of 35. Around one third of couples in which the wife is over 35 have fertility problems. This rises to two-thirds when the woman is over 40.
2. Bad timing
Women mostly ovulate once during each cycle, and the most likely time for conception is 14 days before a period. Missing the best time for ovulation will of course greatly decrease the possibility of pregnancy.
3. Hormonal disorders
If the thyroid is underactive or the pituitary gland is malfunctioning, then fertility is likely to be affected.
4. Smoking
Researches have shown that toxic chemicals in cigarettes can damage the lining of the fallopian tubes. And men who smoke can have a decreased amount of sperm with sluggist motility.
5. Drinking
Though it is not exactly clear how alcohol affects fertility, studies have shown drinking alcohol reduces the chances of a woman conceiving. And in men, sperm quality can be affected by heavy drinking, having an impact on pregnancy.
6. Sexually Transmitted Infections
Chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and fallopian tube problems in females. And these two diseases can cause permanent damages to the fallopian tubes and uterus, leading to infertility. In addition, gonorrhoea can also decrease man's fertility.
7. Stress
If you are too stressed, then the hormonal in your body can change, causing infertility.
8. Unhealthy body weight
Being very underweight or obese can both affect the fertility.
