What is 2019-nCoV?

In December 2019, unexplained pneumonia appeared in Wuhan, China. The study found that the main cause of the disease is a new type of coronavirus, which can cause viral pneumonia after infection.

On January 7, 2020, it was confirmed as a new coronavirus by genome sequencing. The World Health Organization named it 2019-nCoV(new coronavirus 2019). Since then, the jarring term began to enter the field of vision of the general public in China and the world and has gone through two weeks of global cognitive and communication process.

What is coronavirus?

Coronavirus is a kind of virus widely existing in nature. It is a zoonotic virus that spreads between animals and human beings. Under the electron microscope, they wear a crown, so they have named it the coronavirus. It is transmitted mainly through the respiratory tract. 

Six kinds of coronaviruses have been known to infect human beings, four of which cause the common cold, the other two can cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). The new coronavirus isolated from Wuhan is the seventh coronavirus found to infect human beings.

The new coronavirus is a new strain of coronavirus, which has never been found in the human body before. On January 12, 2020, the World Health Organization named the virus detected in Wuhan, China, as 2019-nCoV. According to the traceability investigation and detection results, the incidence and the recognition of the new virus, it is believed that 2019 new coronavirus originated from wild animals, but the specific species has not been determined.


The new coronavirus is sensitive to heat. It can be effectively killed by 56 ℃ for 30 minutes, 75% alcohol, chlorine-containing disinfectant, ether, peracetic acid, chloroform, and ultraviolet.

Is the new coronavirus SARS?

Some characteristics of pneumonia infected by the new coronavirus are similar to that of SARS in the same year. Both viruses are coronaviruses, which are the same relatives. At present, studies show that the homology of the new coronavirus and bat SARS-like coronavirus is more than 85%. But the new coronavirus is not the same as the SARS virus, and their genetic characteristics are different.
